Drawing from Foucault’s concept of the disciplinary society and the panopticon, this talk explores how power operates not through visible oppression but through self-regulation. From workplace expectations to social media culture, we increasingly surveil and discipline ourselves, believing we are making free choices. But are we truly free, or have we simply learned to love our own constraints? Can the awareness of these constraints lead to creative ways of dismantling the social forces that shape our behavior?

Gözde Çerçioğlu Yücel is a sociologist with a PhD, specializing in social structures and dynamics. With a deep passion for both education and cultural exploration, Gözde has dedicated her career to understanding and addressing the complex issues that shape contemporary society. Her academic background, including her research on the emergence of private art museums in Turkey, has equipped her with a unique lens to analyze societal trends, particularly within the realms of education, social change, and cultural expression.
In her professional role as a project development expert in education, Gözde designs and implements innovative programs that foster personal development, academic excellence, and sustainability. She has been instrumental in the introduction of progressive programs in her school, including sustainable development goals, research and development initiatives, data analysis and data-driven decision making, which contributes to the educational development in Turkey.
Beyond her academic and professional endeavors, Gözde is also a published writer. Her book, Weaving the History: Mystery of a City, Sof, documents the rich cultural and economic history of the Angora goat and its luxurious mohair, which once played a pivotal role in the economy and social life of Ankara during the Ottoman Era. Additionally, she published a collection of short stories-Bir ben var gibi içinde-that explore themes of identity, society, and human experience. Her love for music and dance, particularly flamenco and other cultural expressions, adds a creative dimension to her work and personal life.
